Week of September 18, 2018

Wow!  It is hard to believe that it is almost time for fall break already.  BUT, we are still very much into our studies this week until Friday at 2:15 pm.  :-)

Reading
We are learning how to analyze poems through Love That Dog.  We are also learning about figurative language.  There will not be any tests or quizzes this week.

Writing
We are continuing to develop our fictional narrative writing.  We are developing characters and learning about story arc this week.

Math
Our place value, adding, and subtracting voyage continues.  We will move on to word problems as the week progresses.

Social Studies
We are finishing up the Old World vs. the New World this week and will begin The French and Indian War during the latter part of this week.  My homeroom will have their test on Wednesday over Studies Weekly 2 and Mr. Mathews' homeroom will have their test on Thursday of this week.  They have their study materials.

Science (from Mr. Mathews)
Science quiz on Wednesday September 19, 2018. The students will be asked to match the word with its definition. The students will also be asked to put the Scientific Methods steps in order according to page 9 in their science book.
Water Cycle: the constant movement of water from Earth’s surface to the atmosphere and back to Earth’s surface.
Water vapor: the gas form of water.
Evaporation: the process by which a liquid changes to a gas.
Condensation: the process by which a gas changes to a liquid.
Scientific Methods:
Make observation
Ask a question
Form a hypothesis
Plan and conduct an experiment
Record and analyze results
Draw conclusions
Communicate results

The students also received two diagrams, which they should have glued in their science journals. They will be responsible for filling in a blank copy for the test on Friday September 21, 2018.

As always, thank you for your support. Please continue to check Class Dojo and Remind.  If you need access to either, let me know.

September STEM Challenge

Hello KSE Families,
Today your student participated in a pep rally to celebrate KSE being a PTA School of Excellence, and to celebrate our school working towards our AdvancED STEM certification. Attached you will find a new STEM initiative we are beginning as a way to involve our families in our awesome STEM learning. Please take a minute to read through the letter for details about the challenge. And don’t forget to ask your student about the new shirts they received today from our awesome PTA!
Thanks,

Week of September 10, 2018

Hi parents (and students reading this :0)!

Let's get the week started, shall we?

On Monday, September 10- we will have pictures taken at 12:24.  To make sure the students look the same way they arrived to school, we will not have recess until after photos.  Normally, we go to recess at 11:05.  This will change our day a little, but we will still fit in every bit of learning as possible.

Reading- We are reading Love That Dog and loving it (at least I am), a book about a boy learning to understand poetry.  The vocabulary we have discussed includes:  personification, alliteration, stanza, imagery, and rhyme.  We will discuss hyperbole, onamatopoeia, repetition, simile, and metaphor this week.  Review of these words and how they relate to poetry will continue throughout this week.  They will have a test over the vocabulary words on Friday, September 14.

Writing- Our work on fictional narrative writing continues.  We will develop characters this week.

Math- We are moving right along with adding large numbers with regrouping.  We are using base ten blocks to help us conceptualize regrouping.

Social Studies- We are learning about the European explorers and their journey and their interactions with American Indians.  Students will have an open note test on Friday.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Important Information from PTA

More information about all of these events is available on the PTA website,www.myvlink.org/ksepta/

Week of September 3, 2018

I hope that everyone enjoyed their extended weekend!

Although we have a short week, we have A LOT going on.

*We are going to the Fire Safety Village on Thursday.  We leave at 9:15am and will return by 1:30pm.  Please make sure you have signed and returned both sheets.  Some sheets may come back home today because there were missing checks or information.  If your child does not come back with a completed permission slip, they may not go on the field trip, and I would really be sad for them because this is an important trip.

Reading
We are working on close reading with Love That Dog.  We will be practicing using the UNRAAVEL strategy (please have your students show you the strategy...their notebooks should be at home with them nightly). to help improve our reading comprehension and build vocabulary.

Writing
We are continuing to work on fiction narrative writing and the writing process.

Math
We are well into adding large numbers and learning how to regroup.  We will continue to review rounding and comparing numbers.

Social Studies
We will discuss European settlers and the conflicts they had with American Indians.
