12/17/18 Class Updates and Announcements

Hello parents!

Have we made it through the yucky illness season yet?  Someone PLEASE tell me yes.  We have tried so hard to keep our classroom as close to germ free as possible, but unfortunately some of the kiddos have caught the bug (including my own...let's hope I'm not next).  I am hoping it has passed us now so that we can get through this last week of 2018 together.  Fingers crossed!

Reading
We have been reviewing author's purpose.  The students have a quiz on 12/17 (Mon.) that they have been preparing for since the beginning of last week.  We will also discuss point of view this week.

Math
We are continuing to work on division.  I have added a division video under the math tab that will help the students review.

Writing
We are continuing to work on our opinion writing.  The students will finish their in class writing prompt on Wednesday.

Social Studies
As mentioned last week, my homeroom will have their social studies test on 12/17 (Mon.) and Mr. Mathews class will have their test on 12/18 (Tues.).  Students were provided with notes to study.    They have everything they need to take the test.  Please note that this quarter will end the open notes test.  Students will be expected to know material before they take test.  The open note tests was only to help with the Studies Weekly prepared tests.  If students study the information that I give them, they should have no problem taking my teacher created test.

Announcements
We will have our holiday celebration on 12/19 from 10-11:15 am.  Mrs. Bickford has graciously provided everyone with a sign-up genius and an outline of activities.  You can sign up to bring an item by clicking the link below:

This Friday marks the end of the second quarter.  With that said, I will have to have all grades for students before we leave for break.  If there are any retakes for anything that was given for this week (or if someone needed to take something from last week, but I was out due to illness), they will occur by Thursday.  Please know that this is not a time when the 7 day policy applies because of the grading period and the break.

If your child was absent last week, I will work with them to catch them up during morning work, recess, lunch time etc.,  as usual.

12/10/18 Classroom Updates and Announcements

Hello parents,

Here are the class updates and announcements for 12/10 and a little for 12/17:
*The math quiz taken today has been given to the students.  They should be signed and returned by Monday, 12/10.

Reading- We have finished our research on our animals and our projects are currently on display in the hallway.  The kiddos did a great job!  We are going to recap what we learned about animal defenses.  We are going to spend the next couple of weeks really diving into identifying an author's purpose for writing text, main idea, and inferencing.

Writing- We are continue to discuss persuasive writing.  You will probably here the students reference using OREO for writing.  O.R.E.O. stands for state your OPINION, provide REASONS, support with EXAMPLES/EVIDENCE, and restate your OPINION.  We will also discuss ALL parts of speech and how to identify complete sentences.

Math- We are going to continue to work on multiplication as we dive into division.  Please continue to work with your children on multiplication fact fluency.

Social Studies- The American Revolution and Declaration of Independence are coming to a close.  Students now have interactive social studies notebooks and I will begin doing note checks once a week.

From the Desk of Mr. Mathews

Parents, the science test is moved to Thursday December 13, 2018. It’s been moved because, we are a little behind on content, due to a mini STEM challenge that we are completing in class. If you have any questions, please let me know. Have a restful evening.

Ronnell Mathews Ed.S

Assessments:  Social Studies will be on Monday, 12/17 for my homeroom and 12/18 for Mr. Mathews class.  Please note that there may be another assessment in ELA before the end of this year.  I will keep you abreast of any changes.

Announcements
Our class holiday celebration will be held on 12/19 from 10-11:15am.  Please see Mrs. Bickford's email regarding details.
