12/17/18 Class Updates and Announcements

Hello parents!

Have we made it through the yucky illness season yet?  Someone PLEASE tell me yes.  We have tried so hard to keep our classroom as close to germ free as possible, but unfortunately some of the kiddos have caught the bug (including my own...let's hope I'm not next).  I am hoping it has passed us now so that we can get through this last week of 2018 together.  Fingers crossed!

Reading
We have been reviewing author's purpose.  The students have a quiz on 12/17 (Mon.) that they have been preparing for since the beginning of last week.  We will also discuss point of view this week.

Math
We are continuing to work on division.  I have added a division video under the math tab that will help the students review.

Writing
We are continuing to work on our opinion writing.  The students will finish their in class writing prompt on Wednesday.

Social Studies
As mentioned last week, my homeroom will have their social studies test on 12/17 (Mon.) and Mr. Mathews class will have their test on 12/18 (Tues.).  Students were provided with notes to study.    They have everything they need to take the test.  Please note that this quarter will end the open notes test.  Students will be expected to know material before they take test.  The open note tests was only to help with the Studies Weekly prepared tests.  If students study the information that I give them, they should have no problem taking my teacher created test.

Announcements
We will have our holiday celebration on 12/19 from 10-11:15 am.  Mrs. Bickford has graciously provided everyone with a sign-up genius and an outline of activities.  You can sign up to bring an item by clicking the link below:
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0445acad29a7f85-mrs

This Friday marks the end of the second quarter.  With that said, I will have to have all grades for students before we leave for break.  If there are any retakes for anything that was given for this week (or if someone needed to take something from last week, but I was out due to illness), they will occur by Thursday.  Please know that this is not a time when the 7 day policy applies because of the grading period and the break.

If your child was absent last week, I will work with them to catch them up during morning work, recess, lunch time etc.,  as usual.

12/10/18 Classroom Updates and Announcements

Hello parents,

Here are the class updates and announcements for 12/10 and a little for 12/17:
*The math quiz taken today has been given to the students.  They should be signed and returned by Monday, 12/10.

Reading- We have finished our research on our animals and our projects are currently on display in the hallway.  The kiddos did a great job!  We are going to recap what we learned about animal defenses.  We are going to spend the next couple of weeks really diving into identifying an author's purpose for writing text, main idea, and inferencing.

Writing- We are continue to discuss persuasive writing.  You will probably here the students reference using OREO for writing.  O.R.E.O. stands for state your OPINION, provide REASONS, support with EXAMPLES/EVIDENCE, and restate your OPINION.  We will also discuss ALL parts of speech and how to identify complete sentences.

Math- We are going to continue to work on multiplication as we dive into division.  Please continue to work with your children on multiplication fact fluency.

Social Studies- The American Revolution and Declaration of Independence are coming to a close.  Students now have interactive social studies notebooks and I will begin doing note checks once a week.

From the Desk of Mr. Mathews

Parents, the science test is moved to Thursday December 13, 2018. It’s been moved because, we are a little behind on content, due to a mini STEM challenge that we are completing in class. If you have any questions, please let me know. Have a restful evening.

Ronnell Mathews Ed.S

Assessments:  Social Studies will be on Monday, 12/17 for my homeroom and 12/18 for Mr. Mathews class.  Please note that there may be another assessment in ELA before the end of this year.  I will keep you abreast of any changes.

Announcements
Our class holiday celebration will be held on 12/19 from 10-11:15am.  Please see Mrs. Bickford's email regarding details.

From the Nurse's Station...
Hello parents!

As flu season approaches, we need your help to make sure we keep our kiddos healthy and safe. Here are some important reminders regarding medication procedures and guidelines for staying home/coming to school:

Medication must be brought to the front office or school clinic by the parent/guardian except as otherwise permitted. An “Authorization to Give Medication” Form JGCD-2 must be completed and filed with the School Clinic. Medications must be in original containers with label. The link to the form can be found here http://www.cobbk12.org/centraloffice/studentsupport/schoolhealth/medicine.aspx . Even cough drops are considered medication and must be administered by district guidelines.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your school nurse with any questions or concerns regarding medications at school. Thank you for taking part in keeping our students healthy and safe!

Homework for 11/29

Hello parents,

Math
The students have the 6 and 7 multiplication facts to practice for tonight to help with two digit multiplication.  I am noticing that many of my friends are still learning their facts.  In order to master the two digit multiplication strategies and problems, the individual facts and fact families have to be mastered first.

If you feel that your child knows their facts, you may time them using tonight's homework.  This will help them build fluency.  But, only do this if you feel that your child knows their facts.

Here is a video that will help explain area model multiplication, which we have been working on in class:
Area Model: Partial Products

Also, from Mr. Mathews...
Parents, please have your child study the attached Powerpoint. It is the information that will be covered on our science test which we’ll have on December 6, 2018. Thank you and have a wonderful day.

Thank you,
Mrs. Bruner

Angel Tree

Dear King Springs Families,

We will be doing our “Angel Tree” again this year at King Springs.  Students, staff and community members sponsor King Springs’ families in need during the holiday season.  Please assist us in helping these families in our school community by allowing your child(ren) to select an Angel(s) from the Angel Tree.  We will be collecting gift cards for our families in any denomination (please write the amount on the card).

o   Red Angel  (Target or Wal-Mart gift card)
o   Green Angel  (Publix or Kroger gift card)

Students will be allowed to come to the Angel Tree between 7:20 and 7:50 each morning from November 26th – November 30th at both campuses.  All gift cards must be returned to school by Wednesday, December 5th.  Gift cards should be placed in the black boxes just like any other money your student would bring in.  The tree will be located in the front lobby.  Parents and staff are welcome to take an angel at any time.  You don’t have to have an angel to donate.  You are welcome to just send in a gift card from any of the stores listed above with the amount written on it.  If you have any questions please contact Kristin Hartzheim or Elizabeth Hatcher at 678-842-6944.  Thank you for your support and generosity!

November 26 Updates and Announcements

Hello fabulous parents!

Just a few reminders...

We are going to the Cobb Youth Museum on Tuesday, November 27.  We will eat lunch at school when we return at 12:30pm.  If your child has not sent in their permission slip/money, please do so by tomorrow morning.  If your child does not go, they will be go to another fourth grade classroom while we are attending the field trip.

Reading
We are continuing to conduct our research on animals.  Each student has chosen an animal to research and study.  Our presentations will be Friday, November 30.  The project will be recorded as both a reading and writing grade.  This is an in class project and is not to be completed at home (just an FYI).

Math
We are working on multiplication in math.  Our standards address the standard algorithm and using diagrams to show the multiplication process.  Students need to practice their multiplication facts daily to build fluency.  Through observations and small groups, I am seeing that we are still struggling with knowing our 7s, 8s, and 9 facts.

Writing
We are continuing to work on our opinion writing and how to develop reasons to support our opinions.

Social Studies
We are combining weeks 5, 6, 7, and 8 of our social studies weekly to cover the American Revolution.  You will see more interactive notebooks coming home that highlight our social studies standards specifically.  Assessments will continue to be created by yours truly.

Assessments
Students who were scheduled to make up their social studies test or math test will do so on Wednesday, November 28.  Due to the power outage, we were unable to finish either of the tests and I didn't think it would be fair to count that against the students.  We will also have our prefix and suffix quiz on Friday, November 30.

Have a great week!
Mrs. Bruner

Homework

Hello parents!

I wanted to reiterate that homework is to help students practice the skills and concepts addressed in school and is not punishment.  I want to make sure that students are prepared, especially when there is a cumulative assessment involved such as the one in math tomorrow.

I look for different ways for students to practice instead of just sending worksheets.  My goal is to support you in building well rounded students.

Homework= preparation and not punishment.

Have an awesome Thursday and try to stay dry!

Box Tops...Let's Win This!

Dear Parents,

The first Box Tops collection of the 2018-2019 school year is ending on Friday, October 19.  Last year, our submissions helped raise $1,489.80 for our wonderful school! Let’s see if we can beat last year’s numbers!

Please send in your Box Tops with your child to put in the collection box at their campus (in the teacher's lounge at the K-1 campus and in the main hall by the cafeteria at the 2-5 campus). Place Box Tops in a zip loc bag, or sealed envelope, in groups of 50 or less. Please remember to write your teacher's name, grade level, and your child's name on the outside of the bag so their class can get credit.

The class that collects the most Box Tops will receive a class party in November!

Thank you so much!

Early Release October 15-19 for Teacher Conferences

Hi Parents!

Just a friendly reminder that next week is early release.  Please let your child know how they will be going home each day and send a note if there is a transportation change.

I look forward to seeing you all next week!

PS:  Please do not be offended by the timer that I will use during our conferences.  I think by now, you have all learned that I am long-winded and I want to be respectful of everyone's time.  With that said, if someone is late, I will have to keep with the time limit because I have packed the days and most of them are back-to-back.

I truly appreciate your support!

A Message from King Springs

Parents

On Wednesday, October 19th, King Springs 2-5 was joined by The Safe Routes to School Resource Center, City of Smyrna, and Cobb DOT to conduct a Walk Audit of the area surrounding our school.  The purpose of the Walk Audit was to observe how drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists interact with each other and the built environment.  Stakeholders from The City of Smyrna, Cobb DOT, and Safe Routes to School observed and then met to discuss observations and opportunities.

Parents, your feedback on the existing environment is essential in this process.  Please take a minute to click on the link below and provide your feedback.  The survey will ask questions about your feelings regarding walking and bicycling as well as give you the opportunity to highlight areas of concern.

Don't Forget to Support the Pride...

Support the Pride
Over the last few years, through generous support of King Springs' families, friends and community members and businesses, we have been able to increase the financial support for King Springs Elementary School.  By providing funds for programs targeted by the school, our students and faculty have received resources above and beyond the standard funding by the Cobb County School System.

What is the Support the Pride Annual Fundraising Campaign?
Support the Pride is King Springs Elementary school’s annual giving campaign to raise funds in support of programs that benefit our students and enable us to have the supplies and resources needed to retain our Cobb STEM School Certification.

The King Springs Foundation has chosen not to ask families to sell items or to ask you to get sponsors for participation in an event.  Instead, we hold a capital campaign to raise a majority of the funds we will need to support a number of programs and initiatives for the year.

Please take a minute to read through the letter for details about the challenge. And don’t forget to ask your student about the new shirts they received today from our awesome PTA!

Week of September 10, 2018

Hi parents (and students reading this :0)!

Let's get the week started, shall we?

On Monday, September 10- we will have pictures taken at 12:24.  To make sure the students look the same way they arrived to school, we will not have recess until after photos.  Normally, we go to recess at 11:05.  This will change our day a little, but we will still fit in every bit of learning as possible.

Reading- We are reading Love That Dog and loving it (at least I am), a book about a boy learning to understand poetry.  The vocabulary we have discussed includes:  personification, alliteration, stanza, imagery, and rhyme.  We will discuss hyperbole, onamatopoeia, repetition, simile, and metaphor this week.  Review of these words and how they relate to poetry will continue throughout this week.  They will have a test over the vocabulary words on Friday, September 14.

Writing- Our work on fictional narrative writing continues.  We will develop characters this week.

Math- We are moving right along with adding large numbers with regrouping.  We are using base ten blocks to help us conceptualize regrouping.

Social Studies- We are learning about the European explorers and their journey and their interactions with American Indians.  Students will have an open note test on Friday.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
